Update on Making Money with a WordPress eBay RSS Blog

September 28th, 2007 by shawn · 5 Comments

The nay-sayers said it couldn’t be done because of dupe content issues. Some people commented and said they tried it before and it was not-so-great.

As usual, “whatever”. So the hell what if you didn’t make money? Doesn’t mean it can’t be done.

The blog did make money and is making money. This week was $50 plus some change for example. That’s good money, for any project. Especially considering the project takes me about 5-10 minutes a day to maintain and the site has already payed for it’s hosting/domain/my time making it. Just part of my daily routine.

No job and need cash now? Consider a cash advance if you absolutely need money now. If you are having trouble with your mortgage loans or with mounting credit card debt, get the access to quick cash that can pull you out of trouble.

SO – what about the duplicate content? The secret is to make sure you don’t have duplicate content. You have to add stuff to the mix. I’ll leave that up to you to figure out how, but some ideas of what you might do are:

  • RSS2Blog feeds integrated and mixed with your eBay feed
  • Write descriptions for eBay feed entries
  • Write regular blog posts and mix them up with the feed posts
  • Change the titles

It’s not rocket science. I mean, if something doesn’t just WORK the answer isn’t to simply quit. The answer is to find the problem and come up with a solution.

The second issue is simple: traffic. You have GOT to have traffic. I would say that the more laser-targeting your niche, the better your traffic will tend to be. So guess who goes to my Vintage Halloween Costume blog? It’s not a mix of people who wandered there, some who collect comics and some who breed silkworms and some who enjoy interracial midget porn. No – it’s pretty much just people who are looking for “vintage Halloween costume” or “vintage Halloween costumes” or “Ben Cooper costumes” or whatever. There are like maybe eight main keywords that are targeted and people who search for that stuff end up at a perfect website for that product.

These types of blogs can and do make money, they are 90%-100% automated (depending on how you set it all up), and to work they must be properly setup from both an SEO perspective and as far as the niche is concerned. (Hint: get a specific domain name to your niche if you can).

BTW one more thing: my blog still looks uglier than John Chow with a hangover, but it still gets good results. There are two philosophies on this. 1) Make it ugly and people will click on your links or ads 2) Make it pretty because then people will stay.

My philosophy has been “I’ll get to it” intending to make it look nice. I just haven’t found a good theme for it as of yet, and moved on to other projects. (Ahem. I sure hope Eli is right about building all those database sites…)

I looked at your blog and you’re most of the way there. I would re-adjust your keywords and decide what niche you are aiming for. Looks good however. YOU CAN DO THIS!!

I’ve done this, have made 7 sites on different niches and it does work! You have to make sure that you set everything up at the beginning (SEO, maintance plugins, etc) and you’re on your way. Once created and done, all that’s left is to get it indexed and start collecting backlinks!
