UPDATE (5/2/09): The script originally referenced in this post is no longer available (the author, LinkyMe, mysteriously disappeared – along with his site).

If you read my previous post about link saturation, unindexed referrers, and third-party sitemaps (Don’t Waste Backlinks – Tell Googlebot About Unindexed Referrers…) then you probably had either one of the following three reactions:

What’s a Googlebot?

I know what you’re saying but have no clue how to do it

Thanks for the tip; I’m gonna do it right now

If you don’t know/care about getting your site indexed better, I can’t help you. For the rest of you, I can help you. Or rather, I’ll point you to someone who has made a tool that does exactly what I’m talking about for all future visitors to your site.

This Link Saturation Script generates the code for you – all ready for you to put on your site after you plug in the parameters. Go to http://linkyme.com/link-saturation-script/ and put in the names of any sites you don’t want to be counted as referrers (like your own site), and then put in your keywords. Click “Get Pink Hack Code”.

The next screen will provide you with the code. Copy and paste the code somewhere on your site, i.e. in your single.php or your site’s template file so that it works on every page of your site.

Easy as pie. Be sure to thank the guy who made this helpful ping script (who are you anyway??), and enjoy the benefits.

(Keep in mind this script will only benefit you going forward; unindexed referrers sitting in your servers logs still will need to be indexed and generating a “third-party sitemap” as described in the previous post is the way to do it.)

The nay-sayers said it couldn’t be done because of dupe content issues. Some people commented and said they tried it before and it was not-so-great.

As usual, “whatever”. So the hell what if you didn’t make money? Doesn’t mean it can’t be done.

The blog did make money and is making money. This week was $50 plus some change for example. That’s good money, for any project. Especially considering the project takes me about 5-10 minutes a day to maintain and the site has already payed for it’s hosting/domain/my time making it. Just part of my daily routine.

No job and need cash now? Consider a cash advance if you absolutely need money now. If you are having trouble with your mortgage loans or with mounting credit card debt, get the access to quick cash that can pull you out of trouble.

SO – what about the duplicate content? The secret is to make sure you don’t have duplicate content. You have to add stuff to the mix. I’ll leave that up to you to figure out how, but some ideas of what you might do are:

RSS2Blog feeds integrated and mixed with your eBay feed

Write descriptions for eBay feed entries

Write regular blog posts and mix them up with the feed posts

Change the titles

It’s not rocket science. I mean, if something doesn’t just WORK the answer isn’t to simply quit. The answer is to find the problem and come up with a solution.

The second issue is simple: traffic. You have GOT to have traffic. I would say that the more laser-targeting your niche, the better your traffic will tend to be. So guess who goes to my Vintage Halloween Costume blog? It’s not a mix of people who wandered there, some who collect comics and some who breed silkworms and some who enjoy interracial midget porn. No – it’s pretty much just people who are looking for “vintage Halloween costume” or “vintage Halloween costumes” or “Ben Cooper costumes” or whatever. There are like maybe eight main keywords that are targeted and people who search for that stuff end up at a perfect website for that product.

These types of blogs can and do make money, they are 90%-100% automated (depending on how you set it all up), and to work they must be properly setup from both an SEO perspective and as far as the niche is concerned. (Hint: get a specific domain name to your niche if you can).

BTW one more thing: my blog still looks uglier than John Chow with a hangover, but it still gets good results. There are two philosophies on this. 1) Make it ugly and people will click on your links or ads 2) Make it pretty because then people will stay.

My philosophy has been “I’ll get to it” intending to make it look nice. I just haven’t found a good theme for it as of yet, and moved on to other projects. (Ahem. I sure hope Eli is right about building all those database sites…)

We have discussed this controversy lately, partly because I’ve advocated the use of Comment Hut in past posts. It made one guy pretty mad, and it made me laugh actually because it’s nothing to blow one’s stack over.

So I thought I’d share an example of actual spam. Here is the latest comment I received:

Tom Paine | tompaine5454@yahoo.com | xxxxxxxxxx | IP: 69.10.139.105

Hi,
This is a good post. It gives me the information I was in search of.

I have a small query – I don’t have any spam pages or websites. Still I am encountered with messages like “possible spam”, “Spam”, and so.

Do you have any idea why it’s such?

Thanks.

I thought it was interesting that Tom Paine wrote a comment, only to be followed no more than five minutes later with this comment from this guy….

Jimmy Rockasta | pam2110@gmail.com | xxxxxxx | IP: 59.93.144.74

Hi,
This is a good post. It gives me the information I was in search of.

Do you have any idea why it’s such?

Thanks.

I thought, “Weird. These dudes must know each other or maybe they read the same comic books or something, because they talk the same.” So THEN I got another comment less than an hour after THAT one….

Richard Andrews | richardndrws@yahoo.com | xxxxxxxx/blog | IP: 69.41.168.44

Hi,
This is a good post. This is the stuff I was actually looking for.

I have a question though – Frequent number of times I have got a warning as “spam” when I try bookmarking on sites like dig.com or muti.com.

I don’t have any spam pages or websites.

Any idea why do I meet with all these?

Thanks.

So I was perplexed and bamboozled to be quite frank until it dawned on me that THIS is what spam really looks like. Not some person asking a question about a post or making an insightful point. Yeah. So next time someone tells you using Comment Hut or posting comments so you can get some awareness about your blog is EVIL or blackhat or whatever, as long as your comments are valid and not junk like these comments above, don’t sweat it.

I know ya heard pimpin’ ain’t easy. But you’ve gotta make money somehow, and if you’re reading DIY Dollars then you want to know how to make money without having a job (in the traditional sense). Is there any better way to make a lot of money and have fun while you’re doing it, than being a pimp? No! Plus, pimps get to have grills like these:

You want one of those on your front teeth – you know you do, white boy. I know I do. Just think how cool you would look with your very own gold- or diamond- encrusted grill covering the entire front of your top row of teeth! Instead of regular white teeth, you can have teeth that say, “Hey! Look at me! I’m somebody.” Dat’s right. Somebody.

Not jes’ anybody. Naw, man. A pimp. (Say it with me, like this: pee-ump. Pretend you’re on a gritty Atlanta inner-city “hood”. Now say it a bit faster, and mind your diction. “Peump.” Very good!) Now go look in the mirror. Grin. Do you like those white teeth you see? I knew you wouldn’t!! Now, here’s a pimp’s mouth, so you can see what you can look like if you follow my advice…

A wise person once said “Everybody gotta have a hustle.” I forgot who said it, but I think it was an urban youth I once knew. Of I might’ve seen it on a movie. But having your own hustle is good for earning side cash. (I do not advocate these kinds of hustles.)

If you’re looking for cash now consider cash advances. Don not let credit card debt weigh you down. Be it your mortgage loans or student loans, there money available for you.

My preferred method is pimpin’. I put my tricks out on the street and I tell ‘em “Don’t come back until you’ve earned!” and then I slap ‘em upside they haid. They usually earn me some money each day. Specifically, I pimp out affiliate marketing offers and pay-per-click ads. They mah ho’s. (The only ho I ever had to get rid of was ClickBank. She was gettin’ paid but never giving me my cut.)

So I don’t pimp ClickBank no mo’. But I’m still pimpin’. And I urge you to do the same if you have a webite (or websites) and you want to earn some money online.

Let me introduce you to my ho’s, as well as some fellow pimps who will back me up:

MY FAVORITE PROGRAMS

AdSense – My oldest ho. AdSense is an old standby, probably the easiest to use, the most reliable, and a steady earner. Is this the best method or even the only method? No way – I would say AdSense is a staple of monetizing almost every kind of website but it needs to be only one part of a larger variety of methods. You don’t want to put all your eggs in one basket. I see income from this on all my sites, daily – but it’s only one part of my master plan.

COPEAC – I cannot recommend this affiliate network more highly than to say, “I recommend this affiliate network highly.” This is the first recommendation I make after AdSense. If you own a website, click on this link and sign up. You don’t just get in automatically (they will call and verify your info before approval), but when they call be sure to mention you heard about Copeac from DIY Dollars. I promise you will not regret being a part of Copeac – they have the highest paying percentages on their offers, they offer extremely wonderful reporting, tools, and support from their staff. You can even call them and talk to someone – imagine that. Just call and say, “I need some help pimpin’” and they’ll help you with your affiliate offers fo’ sho. A good affiliate network can earn you way more money than AdSense by the way.

AzoogleAds – I signed up with them a while back, and forgot about them. I wish I would’ve implemented their offers sooner into my sites, because they are a great way to make money. Basically this is a CPA (cost-per-action) network, they have tons of great offers, and the account reps pay attention and actually help you when you need help. From what I’ve seen, this is one of the better programs you can join and after Copeac this is really all I use as far as aff networks. Lots of different offers, each offer usually has a few different ways of promoting, and I’ve actually seen results from them. I’ve heard nothing but good about them from other people as well.

Kontera – These guys also make me some dough. When you see a double-underlined word somewhere on this blog, that’s a Kontera link. Basically, I just write my posts and Kontera automatically turns certain words into ad links. When someone clicks on one of those, I make money. I’m not sure how they make the words into links. Like I said it’s like magic, so I compare them to David Blaine. I noticed that the more I put links in my posts, the better the Kontera links blend in and the more clicks I get.

AuctionAds - I love AuctionAds. On one particular site of mine, I get a lot of clicks. If someone clicks and then bids or signs up to eBay I get money. This works great for sites with almost any topic.

Huge Traffic – This is a good program for promoting a dating site. Not appropriate for all sites (like this one for instance), but depending on what kind of site you run this might be a good program to join.

Text-Link-Ads - One of the most useful things I can promote from a link building standpoint. It pays well and also gives first-time buyers a great deal because I can offer discounts with my referral codes. They pay fast too.

Moniker – This is a domain registrar/hosting company. Basically they do what GoDaddy does, but they do it better. I’ve heard from other people that they’re most secure than GoDaddy. Their affiliate program allows you to get referral fees if someone buys hosting or registers a domain through your link. I’ve not seen income from this yet, but I just signed on. (So if you’re gonna register a domain I would appreciate you using my link!)

Others – The SEO software I recommend is WebCEO so I promote that, as well as Comment Hut.

Now, I’m gonna send you off just like they do on MTV Cribs: “Ya’ll seen mah ho’s. Ya’ll seen mah grills. Now get off mah porch!” Go sign up with Copeac (use my Super Affiliate link), get an AdSense account, and go start pimpin’.

Sooner than you think, you gonna have a pimp grill too…

How many blogs exist? There are about 70 million blogs. A total guess here: I’ve probably heard of or seen links to maybe 1000 of those in all my browsing of the web. Out of those, I might have clicked on 100. So do I read 100 blogs? Do I subscribe to 100 feeds? Nope, not even close. That’s because there are good blogs, and then there are [way more] bad blogs.

I subscribe to a total of only two feeds, and I regularly (that is, at least once per week) visit less than ten blogs. There are only two blogs I check every day.

As a blog reader, perhaps you can relate to this – you’ve probably sifted the choices out there down to only a few. If you’re a blog author, I can’t stress the importance of paying attention to what I’m about to say – because out of thousands of blogs, I only find a small percentage to be worth the time to read. That means that most blog writers just don’t get it. So I’m gonna break this down for the people whose blogs I have clicked on, checked out, and left – never to return again. Here’s why I don’t read your blog.

Your blog hasn’t been updated in a long time. Simple: update your blog on a regular basis or I will forget about you and never visit your site again. However if you want me to come back every day, give me something new to read every day. I can’t figure out why someone would start a blog, set it up, write some posts (these take time to write people!) and then not post again for over a month. Then, maybe post again two weeks later. About their cat.

Your blog has no new information to offer. I’ve seen many re-posted posts I’ve seen elsewhere on some subject, with no new info. I expect a blog to have some of that type of content, but if you never offer me new content or original thoughts then I’m not coming back. So if you author a blog and you want to re-post something, you should have something to add or something of additional value to say about it.

Your blog has way to many ads. I’ve been at more than one blog where I felt like I was either at a seminar or watching an infomercial. No, I’m not gonna buy you a beer or a latte. No I’m not going to put that damn AGLOCO toolbar on my computer. I expect a few ads, because I understand you need to pay for all this – and yes I do click on people’s ads for that reason – but when I feel like I’m getting spammed, it’s a turn-off.

Your blog has no other visitors. I can tell if you ever get visitors a few ways. One, you have a FeedBurner stat button that shows you have 4 subscribers (probably you, your mom, some guy who subscribed and then never checks his feeds, and maybe your parole officer I don’t know). So here’s a tip: don’t put any indication of stats if your stats totally suck. Wait until you get at least 200 subscribers before telling everyone. Another indication of “no visitors” is that no one ever comments on your site. I know, there’s no way to make people comment – but just know that activity generates more activity for some reason. If you look at my past entries you’ll see that a few of them are actually great posts with original info (like the gas card post) but no one commented. Other posts I would consider not as good but maybe they were more controversial (the anti-TV post, the Customers I Hate post, or the post about how The Secret is lame, or the one about getting rich) so people commented like they were on meth. Sometimes ya gotta write linkbait to get visitors, and I admit I do it.

Your blog is full of crappy posts. Nothing you can do about it if you can’t write, except maybe don’t blog. The big blogging in-joke is about people who blog about their cat. But people post crap about other subjects as well. The other day I actually saw a post on some lame blog entitled, “How I Start My Morning” and it was the guy’s morning routine! (You think I subscribed to his feed? Oh yeah, right of course I did. I hope he tells me what he ate for dinner or what kind of toothpaste he uses in an upcoming post.) On the other hand, there’s a blog I regularly read which is almost always great. The guy is an (i.e. sarcastically funny) writer and while he only posts about once a week, each post actually teaches me something new and unique about his subject (which happens to be SEO-related).

Your blog looks terrible. Just like I would never even think of taking an ugly girl on a date, I’m not going to waste my time looking at an ugly blog. This is a matter of personal taste. (Hey, maybe you think my blog is ugly. Take it up with Chris Pearson even though he’s no longer responsible for the Cutline theme.) But come on, we’ve all seen some blogs that make the typical teenage girl’s MySpace layout look like good design. (For the people who didn’t get that: most teenage girl’s MySpace pages usually make one’s eyes explode.) I think you should pick a clean-looking or appropriate theme, colors which aren’t too loud, and don’t let it get too “busy”.

Your blog is wimpy. What I mean is, it needs to be more bold and actually show your opinion loud and clear. You need to just say what you want to say. Don’t be afraid of criticism. Just tell people what you think, and whether they agree or disagree they will respect the fact that you said it. I get messages via the contact form every so often that say things like “get your act together” or “you suck” but the people that say those things NEVER put a real email address and never put their name. They never have, and never will. So screw ‘em. Keep in mind if someone has a valid criticism, I do listen and will consider their point of view and respect them. But guess what – I don’t stay up at nights crying over the anonymous critics out there. So write what you want, and don’t worry about what those critics-in-hiding say.

So those are the main reasons I (and other potential readers) probably don’t read your blog. (If you write a decent blog, I probably just don’t read it because I don’t have time.)

What can you do about it? It’s like I tell other drivers when they’re in the left lane and going way too slow: lead, follow, or get out of the way. Those drivers can’t hear me, but you can, Mr. Blogger. Either get out of the game, think of ways to improve your blog, or just listen and learn from successful/quality/interesting/popular bloggers and do what they do.
